Huawei Patent Suggests Radical New Phone Feature - Forbes

A new patent from Huawei suggests that it’s working on a new way to unlock your phone: voiceprint recognition.

Huawei is certainly an innovative company, having been one of the first to have an under-display fingerprint sensor and two-way wireless charging. So, it’s perhaps not a surprise that it’s considering a radically new way to ensure your phone unlocks for you alone.

The report, by Huawei Central, says that the patent was applied for in 2019 and passed, and published last month. Such a time between application and publication indicates it could have been worked on enough to make it a contender on a new device soon.

The system will compare your voice to a recording installed in the device, it seems, so the phone will only open when you speak. VoicePrint is already a feature on the Freebuds 3 true-wireless in-ear headphones which uses AI to decide whether a bone sound pattern is recognized.

Though that’s done through the bone, something you can do when the earbuds are in place, this will use a system that’s different, for example, because the phone will be listening more conventionally.

The patent describes the method and mentions artificial intelligence here as part of the way it works, as well.

Voice recognition is already used widely, in banking apps, for instance, but hasn’t yet appeared in a smartphone for unlocking purposes. It’s certainly convenient, especially at a time when face unlock is hampered by mask-wearing and fingerprint sensors less convenient in winter when there may be a glove in the way.

Though whether you might feel a bit of an idiot saying, “Open, Sesame,” or whatever the key phrase is, in a public place, is another matter.

The speed at which the voice is validated will also affect take-up, although I suspect Huawei won’t release it unless it’s as fast as other methods.

What’s certainly the case is that another security metric in a smartphone that contains so much valuable data could be a good thing.
