In the documentary, Yao talks about her aspirations, her life and her relationship with older sister Meng.
“I wondered why they were negative about me and why everyone likes my sister but not me,” she said. “I will use that doubt as my motivation to continue forward.”
The two sisters’ paths are in stark contrast. The same week Meng was arrested, Yao was in Paris participating in an exclusive debutante ball for younger women of upper-class, highly ranked families from around the world.
Yao’s single “Back Fire,” sung in both Chinese and English, describes her as “such a princess / don’t make me man up” and “cute and dainty, I just got my nails done.”
“Messing around with you, I’m about to break one,” she sings, while dancing on a flashy, neon stage. Later in the music video, she is pictured with a motorbike and donning a fur coat and jewels.
There has been backlash to Yao’s recent activities, with many suggesting the current push behind Yao’s career is a result of her wealth. Yao is considered a member of “fuerdai” — the offspring of Chinese nouveau riche, or second-generation rich kids.
Others have said the documentary and how Yao has positioned herself comes off as tone-deaf, especially as the Chinese government continues its crackdown on wealth, and populations across the country continue to suffer from unemployment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
