Huawei’s Awesome Upgrade Features On Its Latest Smartphone - Forbes

Huawei’s latest flagship phone, the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS, has a clever feature that’s extremely timely. And a newly revealed patent hints that more phones may have this technology down the line.

Right now, with Covid-19 everywhere, there are certain health metrics which are especially important. The Apple Watch Series 6 and other wearables can measure bloody oxygen levels, for a start.

And now, you can check your temperature in less than a second with the new phone. It’s down to an Infrared Thermometry Sensor, as Huawei calls it, and it sits among the camera array on the back of the phone.

In use, you simply hold it against your wrist or forehead and it calculates the temperature pretty much instantly. It can measure the temperature of people and objects across -20 °C (-4°F) up to boiling point, 100°C (212°F), though I’m not sure how wise it would be to put this expensive phone in such a hot place.

If this tech sounds familiar, it’s because though Huawei’s patent has only just come to light, the function has also been deployed in an earlier phone from the company, the Honor Play 4 Pro – as reported by Forbes Contributor Zak Doffman back in June.

The patent was filed back in March, but became public knowledge last week. The patent doesn’t reveal much more than the fact that Huawei has developed and patented the technology, but it certainly leaves open the possibility that it could appear on more Huawei phones. Both the Honor and this phone are at the top end of the company’s range, so it’s clearly something being kept in reserve for the flagship.

It’s perhaps surprising that it hasn’t appeared on more phones but the Mate 40 series was Huawei’s first high-end phone range since the patent, and both the Honor and Huawei phones use the latest processors, respectively the Kirin 990 and Kirin 9000.

In other words, it probably won’t appear on Huawei’s mid-range handsets.

It’s a brilliant idea to add yet one more health-check feature to a phone, especially right now.
