- Renders of Huawei’s upcoming Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro have allegedly leaked online.
- The new flagship would boast an even larger rear camera array than the Mate 30.
- It would also have a P40-style selfie cam system.
Huawei’s follow-up to the Mate 30 may be even more of a camera-centric phone than its predecessor, according to a new leak.
HandsetExpert and PriceBaba have teamed with OnLeaks to post renders of what they say are the Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro, and the centerpiece is clearly the camera array on the back. There’s now an even larger bump with three cameras plus an unspecified sensor (possibly a Mate 30-style depth sensor). It’s more than a little reminiscent of Nokia’s Lumia 1020, where the phone design revolved around photography.
There could also be significant changes to the front. Huawei is reportedly replacing the notched selfie camera with a dual-sensor hole-punch setup like that on the P40 series. If the Mate 40 replicates the P40’s layout, only one will be a camera — the other will be a depth sensor for portrait mode selfies.
The tipsters didn’t share many details of the hardware inside, although it’s safe to presume you’ll find a Kirin chip. The Mate 30’s “waterfall” display appears to remain intact on the Pro model. The Mate 40 is still expected to run EMUI on top of Android without Google services due to the US trade ban, with AppGallery and other software filling the gaps.

Prices and availability for the Mate 40 series aren’t yet clear. However, Huawei introduced the Mate 30 in September 2019, shortly after IFA. We wouldn’t rule out similar timing for the Mate 40, with prices at least as high. The Mate 30 started at €799 for the regular model and climbed to €1,099 for the Mate 30 Pro. Huawei might not be in a rush to change this formula while it’s thriving in a tough market.
