A new leak has just shown us what the next Huawei flagship phone will look like and there are some spectacular details on show.
Huawei tends to focus on two big smartphone launches a year, the P Series in the Spring and Mate Series in the Fall. So, it may be only a matter of weeks before the next Mate Series is revealed.
However, reliable leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, who goes by the name of @OnLeaks, in conjunction with @Pricebaba, has come up with some striking-looking images of the Mate 40 Pro.
Here’s what we think we know.
Circular camera design
Just like the Mate 30 Pro, the cameras on the Mate 40 Pro will sit within a circular frame reminiscent, in fact, of a camera lens. There will be four cameras in the circle.
Unlike last time, though, one of these looks like being a periscope lens, where the light is reflected inside the body of the phone, allowing a much greater focal length. On the P40 Pro, for instance, this allows for a lens with the equivalent of a 10x zoom compared to the main lens. It’s not known what the zoom equivalent will be here, but the tell-tale square shape in the lens means we know there’s a periscope involved.
Mind you, some other leaks and renders show this lens as a blank circle, so there is some mystery connected to what this lens might be. There have already been hints that the phone could feature a radically different camera technology, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Waterfall display
This was a glorious element in the Mate 30 Pro, a display which cascaded down the long sides of the phone, like a waterfall. It’s back. One big difference, though, is that this time there will be physical volume buttons. On last year’s model, the screen went so far that there was no room for these buttons and Huawei opted instead for virtual onscreen buttons. Though this handily meant you could control the volume from either edge of the phone, these physical buttons may well be easier to use.
No notch
The wide notch on the Mate 30 Pro looks like it’s on the way out, according to this information. Instead it’ll be replaced by a wide lozenge-shaped holepunch at the top left of the display. This is a change in style which was pre-empted on the P40 Pro.
Of course, since the leak is a visual one, we have no detail of what might be inside the phone. Doubtless the latest Huawei silicon, that is, a Kirin chip. Rumors suggest that there will be a high refresh rate on the display, which could look great. What won’t be there, of course, is access to Google Mobile Services, so access to Google Maps, for instance, will be via the phone’s browser. Huawei’s own mapping app is not here yet, but may offer a decent alternative.
There are weeks before the new phone is revealed, so plenty of time for more leaks.
