VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A senior executive for Chinese communications giant Huawei Technologies will be in a Canadian courtroom Monday arguing her extradition to the U.S. should be halted because her rights have been violated.

Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei’s founder and the company’s chief financial officer, at Vancouver’s airport in late 2018. The U.S. wants her extradited to face fraud charges. Her arrest infuriated Beijing, which sees her case as a political move designed to prevent China’s rise.

Meng’s defense team will argue the extradition proceedings should be halted because they claim Canada Border Services Agency officers detained and questioned Meng without a lawyer, seized her electronic devices and compelled her to give up the passcodes before her official arrest.

They also will argue the Royal Canadian Mounted Police acted at the behest of the FBI to gather and share technical information about Meng’s laptop, phones and tablets, in violation of the Extradition Act.

Meng’s defense also believes her arrest was politically motivated and will point to past comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The U.S. accuses Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company called Skycom to sell equipment to Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions. It says Meng, 48, committed fraud by misleading the HSBC bank about the company’s business dealings in Iran.

Gary Botting, a Vancouver defense lawyer who has written several books on extradition, said Meng’s team will present evidence to the judge to support their claims her rights were infringed under Canada’s version of the bill of rights.

If Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes rules in Meng’s favor it could end the extradition hearing, Botting said. The prosecution would have the right to appeal.

In May, Meng failed in a bid to end the extradition process when Holmes ruled the allegations against her could constitute a crime in Canada as well.

Meng’s arrest has soured relations between Canada and China. In apparent retaliation, China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor. China has also placed restrictions on various Canadian exports to China, including canola oil seed.

Meng remains free on bail in her multimillion mansion in Vancouver.

A Japanese semiconductor maker called off what was to have been one of this year’s biggest stock offerings, after earlier saying that U.S. export restrictions on China’s Huawei Technologies Co. were hurting its business.

Kioxia Holdings Corp., owned by a Bain Capital-led consortium, had planned to list its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Oct. 6 at a price that would give the company a valuation of around $16 billion. It already had reduced the planned listing price and warned about the Huawei problem.

Kioxia said Monday it was postponing the initial public offering indefinitely, providing one of the biggest concrete examples of how the recent U.S.-China battle over technology is affecting companies world-wide.

The company didn’t mention Huawei in its news release. It offered the coronavirus pandemic and stock-market volatility as reasons for the decision without giving details.

The Japanese maker of flash-memory chips has said its sales to Huawei make up a considerable part of overall revenue and will likely be subject to U.S. export restrictions.

In August, the U.S. Commerce Department said non-U.S. companies would need a special license to sell chips made using U.S. technology to Huawei. Since many chips use American technology in some form, the rule is likely to place severe limits on Huawei’s ability to source parts for its telecommunications equipment and smartphones.

In addition to curbing business with Huawei, the U.S. restrictions may lead to excess supply and price drops for flash-memory products, Kioxia has said.

Kioxia was formerly known as Toshiba TOSYY -0.83% Memory, and Toshiba Corp. retains a stake of about 40%. Toshiba shares fell more than 3% in early Tokyo trading Monday while the overall market was up.

Measuring the Banking Industry's Rises to the New Normal

As well as the processor, the latest leaks, as picked up by Huawei Central, give us a better idea of what it will look like. showing a phone with a large, lozenge-shaped holepunch camera cut-out in the screen and a waterfall display that tumbles down the sides of the phone.

Separately, many of the key specs have been revealed on the Telecommunication Equipment’s Network Access Managements’ site. Alongside the Mate 40, there will be the Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+ and Mate 40 RS Porsche Edition.

The Mate 40 Pro+ is likely to aim to match the P40 Pro+ with its utterly exceptional cameras and drop-dead-gorgeous design. The measurements of Mate 40 indicate that this phone will have a 6.5in display and be bigger than last year’s Mate 30. It’ll also have a big, 4,000mAh battery and (surprise, surprise) 5G connectivity.

But the latest leaks continue to claim that the display will be curved on the Mate 40 and really, really curved – a waterfall display – on the Mate 40 Pro. Other revelations include a tweet that describes the cameras on the Mate 40 Series.

A single front-facing camera is predicted, with four lenses spaced out in the familiar Mate circular panel on the back. One of these four will use a Sony sensor, the IMX 700+, a periscope camera that enables a much higher zoom equivalent.

Some of the leaked images purport to show the phone inside a protective case but, even though the case wraps around a lot, the waterfall display is still easily seen.

Unlike the Mate 30 Pro, however, it’s believed that this year’s phone will have physical volume buttons, where last year’s model used the touchscreen to create virtual volume controls. The benefit of that virtual system was that you could adjust the volume by double-tapping on either side.

What we know already is the Kirin 9000 processor will have a 5nm design, the phone will have the next operating software, EMUI 11, installed at launch and may offer a much faster charge, 65W, with the right charging plug which may be supplied.

The launch is due for October, probably the middle of the month, in China. The success of the phone is crucial to Huawei, though the other constraint, the limited stockpile of Kirin 9000 chips, means the triumph may not soar quite as high as the company would like.

I don't care about it being modeled after the Fold. I'm just interested to see if they can make a slimmer device with less of a gap. When it is all said and done, Foldable phones will not look like the Fold or the Mate XS. They will look like the Microsoft Duo.

The Fold is not the ideal design Samsung wants. That is proven by the two concept Folding phones they showed in their commercials. The Fold's design is to accommodate a screen that cannot completely fold flat at this time.

They should price it very low. Unless people will go for Z fold because they probably will be very similar. I believe people who chose Mate X over Galaxy fold priotized that outer folding display...

Just b... moreIf you are that good at counting and knowing what's going on.. well, we are not necessarily saying it looks like the Fold 2, it looks like the Fold 1, too, which is 1 year and almost 8 months old since its unveiling. The only major difference is the bigger outside screen, which we know it was coming with the second gen, since literally everyone complained about the first one. So this patent application could be even one year old, its general design and especially the hinge is still Samsung-like. And I generally defend Huawei but not this time.

Well, the concept was cool while it lasted. But I seriously think the Mate Xs design was the best. No wasted things such as an extra selfie camera or two. No 2 displays. But hey, it’s just started, and maybe Samsung or Huawei will find a new better way.
