HONG KONG -- Huawei is launching its own HarmonyOS mobile operating system on its handsets as it adapts to losing access to Google mobile services two years ago after the U.S. put the Chinese telecommunications company on a trade blacklist.

Huawei was expected to announce the launch of HarmonyOS on Wednesday for various devices including smartphones and tablets.

The company is still cut off from essential American technologies including Google’s mobile services and some computer chips needed to power its devices after the U.S. put it on an entity list, saying Huawei might aid China’s espionage efforts — an accusation the company vehemently denies.

Huawei’s inclusion on the entity list restricts American companies from doing business with the Chinese telecommunications equipment and smartphone maker. The blacklist has been a critical blow for Huawei, which has relied on essential technologies from the U.S.

Once the world’s largest smartphone maker, Huawei fell out of the top five list globally last year, nudged aside by South Korea’s Samsung, according to data from market research firm Canalys.

Other Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo have since overtaken Huawei in terms of global sales. Huawei currently ranks seventh globally and third in China, following a 50% drop in smartphone shipments in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

Last November, Huawei also sold its budget Honor smartphone brand as it sought to cushion the impact of U.S. sanctions.

Huawei’s HarmonyOS smartphone rollout is a workaround for its lack of access to Google services, especially for smartphones that it sells abroad. While handsets that were sold prior to Huawei's blacklisting continue to run Google services, its newer devices will have no access to Google's mobile services or updates.

To solve this problem, Huawei launched its own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) platform that lets developers launch apps for Huawei devices. In March, Huawei said that over 120,000 apps were now on its app store and using HMS, although it is still missing apps popular overseas such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Owners of Huawei phones who have no access to Google services won't be able to download apps such as Gmail or YouTube. Instead, HMS offers shortcuts to the mobile sites of such services.

Google is blocked in China, so Huawei users in China are unlikely to be affected by this. But the lack of access to Google services makes Huawei a less attractive choice for overseas users, who are used to watching videos on YouTube or using the Gmail email app, analysts say.

Attempts to popularize Huawei's new HarmonyOS may be an uphill task. Attempts to challenge dominant operating systems have usually fallen flat, such as Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system and Samsung’s Tizen operating system. It is unpopular in the smartphone world but is used in smartwatches.

“It’ll be interesting to see what the Harmony OS user interface looks like and whether there really are some features that give it a leg up with some users, but I’m not holding my breath,” said Bryan Ma, vice president of client devices at market research firm IDC.

“It still comes back to all the discussion that’s been happening over the past couple years which is, if there’s no Google services, that’s a big problem,” he said.

However, Huawei’s move to a mobile operating system that can run on smartphones could give it a new business model of distributing it to other smartphone vendors in China that might be keen to earn revenue by listing their apps on Huawei’s mobile services.

“HarmonyOS might be quite appealing to vendors who don’t have the resources to build their own OS,” said Nicole Peng, vice president of mobility at market research firm Canalys.

Making manufacturing productive again with IoT - Huawei

Cloud computing, big data, and IoT are ushering in the age of Industry 4.0 – a time when manufacturing is becoming smart and data-driven. Huawei's smart manufacturing solution, developed in collaboration with industry partners, is designed to help manufacturing enterprises carry out digital transformation and build competitive advantages as the fourth industrial revolution begins.


The growth of traditional industries has slowed almost in parallel with the booming development of the mobile Internet industry. Manufacturers have faced significant growth obstacles, including high manufacturing costs, low efficiency, and the lack of ability to innovate.

From 2011 to 2015, the annual average growth rate of global industrial productivity dropped from 4 percent, which had stayed constant for 20 years, to just 1 percent. One reason is labor costs: In China, for example, costs doubled from 2004 to 2014, with productivity growth falling far behind. Innovation has been weak, with traditional manufacturers focusing on extending existing services and product features such as performance indicators.

The fourth industrial revolution

Over the past few years, each of the main global manufacturing powers has introduced new policies to promote digital transformation and stay competitive. Launched in 2013, Germany's Industry 4.0 strategy aims to create smart factories and smart manufacturing innovation centers. France's New Industrial France policy sets out plans for 34 new projects, from next-gen high-speed trains to electric aircraft, smart textiles, and factories of the future. The National Network for Manufacturing Innovation plan in the US will set up 45 innovation centers to develop innovative smart manufacturing technologies. Japan's Society 5.0 is the nation's vision for robots, new energy vehicles, and 3D printing, among other innovations. Proposed in 2015, China's Made in China 2025 outlines a three-stage plan for developing China's manufacturing industry in 10 priority sectors. And the UK's strategy for manufacturing extends to 2050, aiming to promote manufacturing and service integration and increase the number of skilled workers.

Alliances for the future

Germany, the US, and China have made the most progress in advancing smart manufacturing, with alliances set up in each of the three countries: the Industry 4.0 Alliance in Germany, the Industrial Internet Alliance (IIC) in the US, and the Alliance of Industrial Internet (AII) in China.

Germany's Industry 4.0 platform has developed more than 130 innovation projects in areas such as mass customization, adaptive factories, self-organization and adaptive logistics, human-machine interface technology, and smart product development and production. The IIC has set up over 30 testbeds and more than 60 projects to look at innovative applications in sectors such as energy and power, industrial manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, and smart cities. China's AII, which now boasts 404 members, has launched over 20 testbeds, covering areas such as discrete manufacturing, energy and utilities, port logistics, and basic medical care; 17 industrial Internet use cases; and 8 industrial Internet big data use cases. These use cases include smart production, mass customization, network coordination, service extension, production process monitoring and optimization, and remote equipment O&M.

IoT facilitates smart manufacturing

To help traditional manufacturers carry out rapid digital transformation, Huawei has leveraged its powerful ICT capabilities and joined forces with industry partners to launch a complete smart manufacturing solution. The solution can help industrial enterprises achieve smart manufacturing in four main areas: terminals and sensors, access and transmission networks, capability opening, and upper-layer applications.

On the terminals and sensors front, Huawei has collaborated with industrial partners to smartify the dumb terminals used in traditional manufacturing so they can upload equipment data and receive commands. There are two methods of smartifying dumb terminals:

Adding wireless chips: An eLTE or NB-IoT chip is added to the manufacturing terminal. The chip can transmit data generated by the terminal via the eLTE or NB-IoT network, enabling manufacturing data to be collected and commands issued.

LiteOS: Huawei's LiteOS IoT operating system is embedded into manufacturing devices, simplifying the development work of cloud-device interconnections.

For access and transmission networks, Huawei provides a converged wired and wireless network access method to ensure stable access for manufacturing equipment.

Wired access: Huawei's EC-IoT gateways support multiple interfaces and protocols to facilitate access for different types of manufacturing equipment. With the gateways providing edge computing capabilities, applications can be easily developed and deployed, enabling real-time device management and maintenance.

Wireless access: Huawei offers two wireless access methods: eLTE and NB-IoT. For communication within a manufacturing plant, an enterprise can leverage Huawei's solution to build their own eLTE private network, providing unified access for broadband, narrowband, and trunking, enabling functions like scheduling automated guided vehicles (AGV), camera access, collecting production data, asset inventory, monitoring energy consumption, monitoring gas, and trunking communications. Manufacturers can implement a multi-functional network to reduce the number of internal networks and cut management and maintenance costs.

For external communications, Huawei's NB-IoT chips can be embedded into devices and enabled to transmit data over a telecom operator's NB-IoT network to report data. On the platform front, Huawei's one-stop cloud services portfolio provides an IoT platform, IaaS, a database, big data analysis, security, and applications. For IoT scenarios, it offers references to typical architectures and optimization features for cloud services in different sectors. One of these services is OceanConnect, which provides connection management, unified access, visual device management, big data analytics, and capability opening for IoT devices.

One-stop connection management: M2M connection management capabilities include device management, operations management, pipe management, fault diagnostics, Dashboard, and automated monitoring for individuals and businesses. The API provides integration capabilities for external applications.

Unified model and quick access for massive numbers of devices: For southbound access to large numbers of devices, the IoT platform provides unified, quick access capabilities, preventing problems with different access protocols and enabling application and device decoupling. The IoT platform offers a unified model for northbound applications, helping them leverage device data. The IoT platform can adapt to different protocols through cloud gateways, device-side agents, and SDKs.

Visual device management: Provides upgrades, diagnostics, remote operation, and visual management capabilities for IoT devices plus LWM2M-based device management.

Big data analysis: The IoT platform provides secondary development and supports real-time and offline analysis and data sharing for new services. By establishing big data analytics models and collecting industry data, enterprises receive big data and statistical analytics services, including basic information resources use, business data, user behavior, and geographic location.

Capability opening: Network capabilities, connection capabilities, device management, and big data applications are opened up to the enterprise, helping it to quickly build applications.

Huawei has worked with industry partners to build manufacturing industry applications including MES, CAD, CAE, and ERP into Huawei's IoT platform and public cloud, so that manufacturers can build business systems. Huawei has also worked actively with industry ISV and IoT ecosystem partners to build scenario-based IoT solutions that accelerate IoT application innovation in industry verticals.

Real-world smart manufacturing cases

Huawei Songshan Lake Manufacturing Facility

Huawei deployed an eLTE-based smart factory solution at its Songshan Lake factory in Dongguan, China. Services include video surveillance, AGV control, robot status data backhaul, device data collection, device power consumption monitoring, asset inventory, and personnel and key asset location. The device power consumption monitoring and asset inventory functions leverage an eLTE-IoT narrowband solution, while the other functions harness LTE-U broadband technology. After the solution was deployed, productivity went up by 30 percent and OPEX and power consumption fell by 20 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

Automotive manufacturing

Huawei and the robot manufacturer KUKA have jointly tested an eLTE-based smart factory solution for reporting robot status at an automotive manufacturing plant. By enhancing network connectivity, the collaboration will enable more wireless services in the future, including mobile robots, AGV, and edge gateways, so that more LTE-based and 5G-based use cases can be verified. It will also optimize existing production lines, improve production efficiency, and shorten product release cycles.

Elevator industry

Huawei partnered with the industry giant GE to provide smart after-sales services for an elevator company. The solution harnesses EC-IoT gateways to collect data on elevator operations, providing predictive maintenance for elevators through big data analytics. With the solution, downtime was reduced by 90 percent and operating expenses by 50 percent.

Petrochemical industry

Jiujiang Petrochemical deployed Huawei's eLTE-based smart factory solution to enable the smart inspection of refineries and smart monitoring of hazardous gases. Since the smart factory was built using Huawei's solution, Jiujiang Petrochemical has made new breakthroughs in safety and environmental protection, energy saving and emission reductions, cost reductions and efficiency enhancements, and green/low- carbon manufacturing.

The future of manufacturing is data-driven. The right solutions and partnerships are the tools to make it happen and guide manufacturing enterprises through the digital transformation process.

Huawei Targets Google’s Android Dominance with Harmony OS - The Wall Street Journal

HONG KONG—Huawei Technologies Co. on Wednesday launches its self-developed operating system for mobile phones, the company’s latest bid to break free of U.S. suppliers and an attempt to challenge Google’s dominance in smartphone software.

The Chinese tech giant plans to launch its new operating system, known as Harmony OS, across a large number of its smartphones during an online-only event, as well as unveil smart devices that will also run the company’s latest homemade software.

Huawei gadgets have been cut off from updating Google’s Android operating system since August, following a series of U.S. sanctions against the Shenzhen-based company. The ban also cost Huawei access to the U.S. company’s package of smartphone software known as Google Mobile Services, used widely across the industry.

While Huawei’s own smartphone sales are in free fall after briefly topping the world a year ago, the company is targeting other handset vendors that they hope will adopt Harmony OS, posing a direct challenge to Google Android’s dominance of the market.

Samsung Electronics Co., Xiaomi Corp.  and the rest of the world’s top-selling phone makers besides Apple Inc. all use Google’s Android. Chinese sellers make up 57% of the global handset market, according to market-research firm Canalys and could be potential takers if Huawei’s Harmony OS develops into a worthy match.

Convincing vendors to adopt Harmony OS, however, may be an uphill battle. With an established network of software developers and billions of consumers used to its interface, Google Android dominates the smartphone market. More than eight out of 10 smartphones sold run Android. A Google spokesman didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Other challengers have had limited success unseating Google. Years ago, Samsung launched a rival operating system called “Tizen,” but it has failed to gain traction among the company’s smartphone users. Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.70% also tried selling smartphones with a version of its Windows operating system to little success.

Huawei, the world’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment, has been racing to cut its dependence on U.S.-made technology and shifting its focus to software after selling off its budget phone unit last year. The effort has grown more urgent since Washington blocked Huawei from buying chips from its main suppliers last August.

Earlier this year, Wang Chenglu, Huawei’s head of consumer software, said the company’s goal was to end the year with Harmony OS installed on more than 200 million Huawei devices, including smartphones, and more than 100 million devices made by outside companies.

Huawei’s challenges include building a large enough ecosystem of software developers, building a large enough user base that entices developers and convincing outside vendors to abandon a tried and tested product, analysts say.

“It’s a giant leap,” said Nicole Peng, an analyst at market research firm Canalys. There isn’t a successful case of an alternative operating system out there, she said. “It takes many, many years to be able to build up that ecosystem and get all the stakeholders to be able to agree on it and see the benefit of it.”

Handel Jones, chief executive officer of consulting firm International Business Strategies Inc., said Huawei will have an easier time fostering adoption of its new operating system in China, where dependence on Google apps is lower. The odds of mass-market adoption of Harmony OS in the next decade “is 80 to 90 percent,” he said.

The challenge is in the U.S., Europe, India and other countries where Google Apps dominate and China-based vendors don’t want to sacrifice sales, he said.

Huawei has released scant details about how the new operating system will look and feel. Huawei unveiled Harmony OS at a developers conference in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan in 2019. It has since rolled it out to an array of consumer devices since then—including on its line of laptops, PCs and smartwatches—but until now has stopped short of making it available on its smartphones.

Huawei has for years been pushing developers to build programs for the company’s nascent app store, called AppGallery. The store has 540 million monthly users and 2.7 million developers to work on new apps, Huawei said. The company has already launched some apps to replace those whose access it lost. For example, a program called Petal Maps replaces Google Maps, while Petal Search replaces the phone’s Google search bar.

The new operating system won’t restore user access to popular apps such as Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, from which Huawei is cut off. Many such apps have long been unavailable in China, the world’s biggest market for smartphones.

Last year, Huawei’s consumer-business chief, Richard Yu, said the company could eventually make Harmony OS available to other smartphone vendors, saying that it would be an open-source operating system similar to Google Android.

Representatives at Xiaomi Corp., and BBK Electronics Co.’s Oppo and Vivo—China’s three largest mobile phone brands—didn’t respond to questions about whether they are open to using Huawei’s operating system. Honor, the midrange phone brand spun off by Huawei last year, didn’t immediately comment.

A handful of Chinese manufacturers are already running Harmony OS on their smart appliances, including home-appliance giant Midea, both companies have said. The operating system pairs with Huawei smartphones, though the devices are only for sale in China, Huawei said. Midea’s website features gadgets like water purifiers and ovens running on the new operating system. Midea didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Ms. Peng, the Canalys analyst, said Huawei may have greater success selling its operating system to vendors dominant in markets such as Africa, where Google’s mobile software is less entrenched and local software developers are more prominent.

“It may be a stretch, but it’s still possible,” she said.

Huawei’s big HarmonyOS event is this Wednesday (June 2) and will introduce the second version of the in-house OS. Harmony has been around for a couple of years now, but version 2 brings a tectonic shift – it will power phones, tablets and smartwatches, not just smart TVs.

The event should feature a more detailed look at the new OS version (beyond unofficial video demos). And what better way to unveil the first devices that will be run HarmonyOS 2.0? Here is what we expect to see on Wednesday.

Huawei MatePad 2 and Pro 2 – Very likely

With Huawei teasing a new M-Pencil stylus it seems more than likely that we’ll get a new tablet – perhaps two. The Huawei MatePad Pro 2 is expected to have a 12.9” 120 Hz OLED display, a Kirin 9000 chipset (with 5G connectivity, 9000E for the Wi-Fi model) and 40W fast charging (and 27W wireless charging).

There should be a Huawei MatePad 2 model, which should be smaller, though perhaps not by much – we’ve heard talk of a 12.2” model (a different panel may make a bigger difference).

Interestingly, leaksters have been calling the software “PadOS”, a branch of HarmonyOS specially dedicated to tablets (just like Apple does with iOS/iPadOS). Anyway, the new tablets may become available soon after the reveal.

Huawei Watch 3 – Very likely

Huawei also teased a watch, this is expected to be the Huawei Watch 3. Running HarmonyOS, of course, unlike the GT-series that the company has been focused on until recently. Those use the related LiteOS, but are not as capable as the WearOS watches. This one should match the Google OS in terms of capabilities.

The Watch 3 is also expected to have an eSIM for a data connection even without a smartphone present (a feature that has been absent from recent Huawei watches). Whether or not it will be able to measure blood pressure is unclear (that is targeted for H2, which might mean a new device or an update pending approval from the medical authorities).

Huawei has ambitious goals for HarmonyOS and wants it to reach 300 million devices by the end of the year, including 100 million that have it pre-installed (the numbers, of course, include things as big as tablets or TVs and as small as watches).

Huawei P50 series – doubtful

Huawei did tease the P50 series, but we doubt that we will see a full launch – an introduction and a demo, perhaps. If the company has started mass production of its new flagship smartphone line, it would have leaked. And we haven’t heard anything convincing yet.

That is not to say that fans won’t get to use a Huawei phone running HarmonyOS soon. That will be achieved through updating existing Android models – leaked info suggests that the migration plan includes the Mate 40 series, the Mate X2, the original MatePad Pro and a couple of nova 8 models.

The source that brought this info also claims that eligible devices that are stocked on store shelves have already been updated, so soon users will be able to go in for a hands-on experience (in China, at least). This has bigger implications too, Huawei might stop selling Android-powered phones altogether (at least in the high-end segment).

Huawei unveiled the FreeBuds 4, some Ryzen-powered laptops recently, as well as a couple of MateView monitors.

We expect we’ll see some (if not all) of these make a brief appearance as a show of strength from the Huawei ecosystem.

Vodafone's (VOD.L) Italian unit has secured conditional approval from Rome to use equipment made by China's Huawei in its 5G radio access network, two sources close to the matter said.

Italy can block or impose tough conditions on deals involving non EU vendors under "golden powers", which have been used three times since 2012 to block foreign interest in industries deemed to be of strategic importance.

The government of national unity led by Prime Minister Mario Draghi authorised the deal between Vodafone and Huawei (HWT.UL) on May 20, one of the two sources told Reuters, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.

As in similar deals, the government imposed a set of prescriptions including restrictions on remote intervention by Huawei to fix technical glitches and an extremely high security threshold, the source added.

Vodafone and Huawei declined to comment.

The United States has lobbied Italy and other European allies to avoid using Huawei equipment in their next generation telecoms networks and to closely scrutinize rival ZTE, saying the companies could pose a security risk.

Huawei and ZTE strongly deny the allegations.

In the last 12 months, Italy has adopted a tougher stance on Huawei, while not banning it entirely from 5G infrastructure.

Under previous Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Rome prevented telecoms group Fastweb in October from signing a deal with Huawei to supply equipment for its 5G core network, where highly sensitive data is processed.
